Our method
Voyage en France is an independent, free guide to outings in France. Here is where the information comes from and how we present it.
Where places and events come from
Places to visit and events come from DATAtourisme, the French public database in which tourist offices and departmental and regional tourism boards publish their listings, under an open licence. We read it every night: listings changed the day before are updated.
Each listing shows who provided the information. To report an error (opening hours, price, address), the best way is to contact that tourist office: the fix will benefit every website that uses its data.
Labels
Labels (Most Beautiful Villages of France, Musées de France, Accueil Vélo, Villes et Villages Fleuris…) come from the official website of each label, the French Ministry of Culture and public datasets. They are read once a month.
A label is attached to a place only if both are less than 150 metres apart and share a word of their name. Otherwise the labelled place is shown on its town page, with a link to the official source.
Translations
Descriptions in English, German, Dutch, Spanish and Italian are provided by DATAtourisme and are often machine-translated. They are marked “Translated text”, with a link to the French original.
How we work out the criteria
Free, indoors, suitable age, wheelchair access: when the information is in a dedicated field (price of €0, “museum” type, Tourisme & Handicap label), we use it as is. When it only appears in the description (“free entry”, “from age 6”), we keep only unambiguous wording and mark it “according to the description”.
When in doubt, the information stays unknown: an outing is never announced as free because it is free only on Sundays or for under-12s.
The price for your family is calculated only if each person matches a written price (“ages 6 to 12”, “under 4: free”). It is calculated in your browser: the site never knows who is in your family.
Town pages
Figures on “What to do in …?” pages are recalculated every day. For a small town, we add what is within 10 km so the page stays useful.
What we do not do
No position is paid for: results are ordered by distance, dates and how complete listings are. No advertising cookies, no invented reviews. Your saved outings (♡) and “who is coming” stay in your browser.
Distances
Distances are calculated as the crow flies, between the coordinates of the two places: we do not calculate routes. A place “3 km away” may be on the other side of a river or a mountain. The “Directions” button on each page gives the real route.
“Where to eat”, on place pages, only shows labelled restaurants (Maîtres Restaurateurs, Tables & Auberges de France, Bistrot de Pays) and the Accueil Paysan farm tables and inns, which serve real meals on reservation. Not Bienvenue à la ferme farms, whose “catering” may only be a drink for groups, nor guest tables, which are for people staying there. No place is paid for.
Maps
Base map © OpenStreetMap contributors. Mapping libraries are hosted on this site: apart from the base map, no request is sent to a third-party service.
Updates
Places and events (DATAtourisme): every night. Labels: once a month (outlines of parks and forests every three months). Towns: official INSEE list, once a year. The date of the figures is shown on each page, and each listing shows its own date.
